Out from hiding. Hi!

Posted on 16.10.2009 at 21:31

Yes, yes, I know. MIA Jenn has finally posted something! Quick recap for those who care…

Me and my guy have been together for seven months now. I recently lost my job, looking for another. AND I’m still not writing.

No ideas. Nada, zip. It sucks because I really need to move on and focus on something new, but there’s so much going on it’s hard to concentrate. Excuses, I know…but I usually only write when I have ideas. I’ve even gone back to old ideas to see if something would spark and I still have nothing.

Something will come to me, eventually. For now, I have to write something and since my other favorite topic is TV so let me get right to it.

I promised myself I wouldn’t pick up any new shows (after already breaking that promise by getting wooed by Glee last TV season), well I lied. Again. Flash Forward. ‘Nuff said right? I mean who could blame me. First, it’s a JJ show, points there already. Second, it’s time-travelish, which automatically puts it in the Sci-Fi category. Not to mention the awesome cast and character story lines. I’m a big fan. Love the big plot, but I’m not sure how long they can carry on with it.

Okay, not that I got the new show out of the way, start on Sunday? Sure!

Simpsons, Family Guy and American Dad are up to par this season. I like the Cleveland Show so far, hope they keep it up.

I’m digging Heroes too, it’s getting juicy again, but I hope they don’t follow the same dried out plots again, that’ll ruin everything. Oh, and Darth Maul is a neat addition. I want to see him fight again, damn it. Gossip Girl still has it’s hooks in me. It’s Chuck Bass, I swear. I can’t get enough of him. Next week is going to be fantastic.

SYTYCD should have the best season ever this year. The talent is outrageous. I have a few faves picked already! Boo about Mia leaving if it’s true, she’s my favorite choreographer. I’m doing the Super Super fast version of Biggest Loser, mainly watch the challenges and weigh ins. Hate Tracey, love Shay. Hope she goes far.

Glee is my favorite new show. I love it to pieces. Criminal Minds is addictive. Three stations are playing reruns and I’ve been watching them constantly! The new ones are awesome as always. I only have one problem with that show, they refuse to let Morgan and Garcia get together. Grrr.

Thursday is the big night. Supernatural and Fringe are extra creepy/funny so far this year. This weeks Sup had me rolling. The Mentalist is fantastic as always, and Survivor has been intriguing to say the least. Interesting people this year.

I’m a little behind on Smallville right now, but so far so good. Will be interesting to see what direction they take it and if this will be the rumored last season. I think it may be time to say goodbye, but I’m still down for a Justice League spin off!

My guy wants to watch V. Since I kinda force him to watch the majority of my shows, I figure I should watch something he wants to check out. Good thing he likes most of my shows too, how lucky am I? He draws the line at Gossip Girl and I can’t say I blame him. LOL.

So, other than looking for work, not writing, and watching TV, I’m trying to stay busy. Went horseback riding a few weeks back, did well for only my second time on a horse. Visited my mother and nephew, won a few bucks at the casino.

Also, I’m helping my trainer with some pictures and stuff for her social networking. PLUG! You should check her out on Facebook and/or Twitter @onestepbody. She’s awesome and has helped me lose 70lbs since mid last year!

The winter is here, so I have to be extra good and unlazy. Not working certainly won’t help, but I’m staying positive. Things happen for a reason, right? Despite the few recent rejections I’ve received from queries, this might be the time when something happens for me. One never knows, but one door closes, another opens. Least that’s what people say. I’ve got my fingers crossed and if you happen to be one of those “lucky” people, send some my way if you can. :-)

Goodbye June....I won't miss you.

Posted on 03.07.2009 at 09:08
What a month, huh? It rained for 23 out of 30 days here in Jersey. It's like June has become the new April. Mother Nature is getting pissed at us, I hope people are noticing.

We witnessed a couple plain crashes. Watched a country speak out for freedom and die for it. Saw more of our troops sacrifice their lives to keep us safe. We lost some great famous people this month as well, controversial people, strange people, fun people, and not as well known people. It's always sad, to me, when people die, regardless of their status or reasons. I got so many breaking news alerts from CNN this month my heart skipped a beat every time, wondering what would happen next.

I moved into my new apt last month. My car needed repair. AND I had a gazillion birthdays in June too, so I'm relatively broke.

However, I won't complain. As July 4th rolls up on us, I'm thankful for everything I have because I know I am much better off than many people in the world right now. My brother and I are both working. We have a roof over our heads. We have two dogs who love us unconditionally. Our family is there to support us whenever we need it. Friends never let us down. We live in one of the best countries in the world. We are free.

So thank you to all the people out there in the military and yes the government who continue to work hard to keep us free. Without you, your families and your sacrifices, we would not be the country we are today.

I hope everyone takes a moment tomorrow to really think about how wonderful this country is. Yes, we have our flaws, but no one person is perfect, no one country can be perfect either.

Enjoy your holiday weekend. Be safe. And remember what you have instead of what you don't have.

I know I'm not blogging much these days, but I'm very active on Facebook. Please feel free to add me if you haven't. I'm always interested in making new friends: www.facebook.com/people/Jenn-Nixon/576234133

Feeling Stuck...

Posted on 18.06.2009 at 11:51
Well, SYTYCD went rather well last night. A few of the routines were so-so, others pretty good. I didn't think any were over the top fantastic, but a few came close. I'm honestly waiting for the top 10, that's when it gets fun and interesting. I have to say, though, the choreographers are kicking it into high gear this year and making the dancers dance their little butts off.

I'll watch the results tonight in about 15 mins. Thank you DVR. How I love thee.

No, I didn't watch Real Housewives of NJ. Gah. I'd rather watch paint dry.

I usually watch documentaries during the summer. I haven't seen any good ones recently, but I'm sure they'll start popping up.

So, yeah, I feel stuck.

I'm still not writing. The last month or so has been because of the move and stress. Things are back to normal, as normal as it gets for me, but I'm still not writing. I don't have a character to write about. I have an idea of the type of character I want, but nothing is coming to me. I could probably do some brainstorming to work out traits and personality, but I also need a plot. That would help, right? It'll come to me, I'm sure. I just need patience, like a good young Jedi.

I feel stuck with Tiva. I've sent Tiva out to a couple places recently, just to see what'll happen, but the query needs work. I don't have a sysnopsis, and the books need a once through for editing still. My BFF had such high hopes for Tiva. I tried not to catch his enthusiasm because I didn't want to be let down, so I guess it worked because she doesn't seem to be going anywhere. It makes me sad. I know the books are good. Yes, they need more work, but the story is great, the characters are fun, and it's not like anything else out there right now.

I feel stuck with Lucky too. Maybe her story is just TOO different? I don't know. Agent after agent says they "see talent", "it's well written", "has an interesting concept" but no one wants to take her on? What's up with that? Even the few editors who've rejected me say that it's good, but not what they are looking for right now. Grr. I still have her out to a few agents, one editor (though I doubt she'll get back to me) and two publishers. I'll probably wait another month or so before I send anywhere else. It looks like I may have to start out smaller than my aspriations and go with a publisher geared toward Ebooks and print instead of the "big" publishers. Though, I'm in Dorchester's new E-Slush pile. Keep your fingers crossed. After reading some of their new books, I can't see how they could say no to me, so I'm staying positive on this one!

I feel a little stuck in general I guess. I've cut back on Facebook and Twitter recently, and I haven't kept up with my blog very well. I skipped a few of my writer's meetings the last three months for various reasons. It sounds like depression but I don't think it is. I think I've tried to do so many things for the last year or so that I truly need a break.

"Real writers write every day" right? Then I guess I'm not quite a real writer yet. Putting my heart and soul into 5 (6 actually) books the last five years of my life has obviously taken it's toll. I went through the whole editing process with Tiva....almost to the point of production, and had the rug pulled out from under me. Now, seeing Lucky in limbo makes me even more sad.

While it's true I will never stop writing, I'm not sure I have the energy or the time or the inclination to spend another five years working on things that are going to take up space on my hard drive and clog my email with rejections. I'm really not sure. Yes, I knew the publishing industry was hard. Heck, I got SLAMMED by about 100 people on AOL when I posted the blurb for my "Play Nice" book. Granted, the book was crap, but those nasty people made me feel like utter and complete shit. It made my skin thick to critisism, but it doesn't really help the emotional side of "completing your baby" and no one gives a crap about it and no one wants to publish it.

I've learned the craft. I have my own voice. I don't follow trends. I'm not the best writer, will never be, because I believe there is always someone better. But I don't follow the "formula". I don't write tranditional stories. I've tried and it got me no where, so I stick with what I'm comfortable with and what I like. Maybe that's my failing in the end?

Just breathe...

Posted on 08.06.2009 at 19:37
Well, I finally have a moment to sit and do nothing. So, of course, the first thing I do? A blog.

After having less than two weeks to find a new place to live (long story), brother and I are finally settled into our new apartment. Had a few minor snags along the way, but nothing major. Mostly, I was worried that one of my dogs was going to have a hard time adjusting.

She's used to having a yard and wasn't doing her business while on the leash. Thankfully, she's okay and doing what dogs do best. Giving me love and driving me crazy. I swear, between the two of my dogs, they are Marley, from Marley and Me all rolled into one!

Anyway, everything is set up, all the stuff is put away and the apartment is nice and clean. I have great friends that helped me out above and beyond and I couldn't thank them enough, even by feeding them. Over all the place is not very big, but it'll do it's job. I just have to get used to paying an extra $400 a month now. Yikes. Rent in NJ is horrible, the only place worse if CA and NYC probably. Ugh.

I've cut back on Facebook and Twitter the last few weeks, just so I could concentrate on moving and switching addresses, and going to the bank, and watching the money flow out, out, out of my bank account. Thank goodness for my mom, she's a life saver! <3

How's this for sucks? I went back to Comcast from Fios only to find out that the apartment complex is getting Fios in two months. GRR! I hate you Comcast! It might be worth it to pay the fee and cancel, but we'll see what happens in a few months. Yeah, sucks.

Onto funner stuff, sorta:

I submitted Lucky to a few more places the last couple of months, got two rejections, but still waiting on others. I have a small list of other places to submit if current ones say no, after that, I don't know what I'll do...I think Lucky's options are numbered. She's a hard sell, I know, but still...my writing is on par with some of the other stuff I've seen recently, I'm at a loss.

*shrug*

No new ideas on the writing front, so I've done absolutely no writing in about three months save blogs. I've skipped a few of my writers meetings as well, mostly been A. busy or B. not interested in the program. Probably skipping one or two more over the next few months, but no worries, I'm still involved and going!

Only watching two shows this summer, So You Think You Can Dance and True Blood. SYTYCD is going to be FANTASTIC this year! OMG I can't wait for Wednesday! And they're doing another season for the fall!! YAY! While my reality TV Heart will always belong to Survivor, with AI a close second, SYTYCD touches me more than either of them. A few times I got teary eyed during the auditions. Not all because of the sob stories, more the inspirational ones. Good stuff.

The most awesome thing happened to me and my guy the other day!!! We were debating dinner. I'm very indecisive and he likes to make me choose because of this, but I wanted him to pick because well, that's how I am. So finally, we get to a red light and he says "Wendy's?" I say, "Yep, that works." Swing into the turn lane and head to the drive thru. We order our food, get to the window and the chick tells us that the lady in the car in front of us paid for our food. Score! I beep and we both waved, with huge ass smiles on our faces as she drove away.

I meant to go on craigslist and thank her but I forgot and by the time I remembered it would have been too late. So, lady in the silver mini-van, thank you!! You made my day. Well, my week actually. Though, I'm certain if I were alone, that never would have happened. He seems to be a bit of a lucky charm. No pun intended.

A lot has happened in the last few weeks and I know I'm probably blanking on a few important things, but now that I've got my computer set up, internet is running and things around here are calming down somewhat, I'll be back blogging as much as I can!

Keep dreaming peeps!

Jenn's TV recap!

Posted on 22.05.2009 at 10:57

Hmm, where to start? I was going to do it by which show ended first, but day by day is probably easier. Limited spoilers unless otherwise noted.

Sunday:

Simpson had a good season this year, but as with the last few years, Family Guy beat them by a mile. FG had so many “OMG did they just do that?” moments, come next season I may need a box of depends so I don’t pee myself. American Dad keeps getting better. Roger cracks me up. I hope the new Cleveland show does well, though I have a bad feeling McFarlane is heading into spin-off madness. Be careful!

True Blood starts in June!

Monday:

Heroes in my opinion didn’t help itself too much with the season ender. Everything up to that point worked for me. I enjoyed watching the tidbits from the first two seasons come to fruition in a different way this season. The writers are shifting it back to where it was that first season, but some of the magic is still gone. I’ll revisit next season, see how the first few episodes do, then…we’ll see.

Gossip Girl is currently my only “teen” show, though I do love the adult dramas as much as the kid’s drama on this show. I picked this show up last summer and loved it from the beginning. Some of the stuff from this season didn’t quite mesh with me, but the majority of it was fantastic. I loved the last couple of episodes most, and still can’t seem to get enough of Chuck Bass. I love his character. The guy who plays him isn’t half-bad either.

24 ah 24. How I love thee. Except for the Kim “I’m gonna run after the baddie without a gun” Bauer and her wacky waving arm flailing-I’m on fire scene, the season finale was fantastic. Rene’s Wild West shootout on the SUV, and going dark? Sweet! Jack seeking forgiveness? Almost brought a tear to my eye. ALMOST, I said! Jack Bauer’s #1 fan does not cry. The show did surprise me quite a few times this season, though I pegged some of the smaller plot points before hand. I did enjoy the way they ended it too, some questions, not to many, and 11 big baddies to go after next season if they want. It’ll be interesting if they bring Tony back. I’m still mad at him, even if he did have a decent reason. Bigger picture Tony, for shame.

Tuesday:

Fringe is awesome. Yes, I started watching it because of Josh Jackson. Having met him on the Dawson’s Creek set a million years ago, and seeing how sweet of a guy he is, I wanted to support his new project. The first episode sucked me right in and kept hold all season long. I love all the freaky science-fiction aspects of the show. What I love more is how real they make it all seem. Some of the ideas are very out in the left field, but Walter (John Noble) does such a fantastic job of convincing us that these things ARE real and that the world is on the verge of unleashing more weird-preternatural abilities. I’ve had my own run ins with some weird things over my lifetime, so this stuff still fascinates me. I’ll be back for season two especially after that little scene in the cemetery. Hmm…

Mentalist season finale fell kinda flat. It was OK, they brought back the lingering subplot with the serial killer Red John, but eh, I was kinda hoping for a little more. Over all, this show combines a bit of Psyche with Law and Order and does a great job of making it gel with the humor and seriousness of police work. The cast as a whole works very well together and has great chemistry. Simon Baker is hilarious as Patrick Jane, and it was interesting to see the darker side of him come out during the middle of the season. Season #2 should be even better and I can’t wait for it.

American Idol…I voted for the winner two years in a row!! Granted, I didn’t think Cook was going to win last year because of all the little girl votes for Archie, but I was glad to be wrong. A little bittersweet this year. Adam and Kris were both great. However, Adam will be better off having not won. Now he can make ANY album he wants without being constrained by the AI winner status and be all pop-like. Kris can do pop or even country and he’ll be fine. Adam doing pop, eh, not really. Rock it out baby!

Biggest Loser: I watched on and off, mostly in recaps too, but didn’t even get a chance to watch the finale, but I saw the results after the fact. Still an inspiration to me! I’m almost at my own goal weight!

Dropped Law and Order SVU, sorry Stabler and Benson, I love you guys but repeats it is….

Wednesday:

Criminal Minds is still one of my favorite “police procedural” shows. This season they had some crazy people doing some very bad things. Nothing in particular stands out at the moment except for the finale. Other than them kinda stealing an idea that CSI did earlier, it was a very good finale. *Mini Spoiler* OMFG Hotch? No way! Of course, I did see it coming at the very end of the season finale but I didn’t expect the gunshot. That’s not good, he was pointing it right in Hotch’s face. I tried to find rumors or something about Thomas Gibson leaving the show but couldn’t find anything. I’d hate for him to leave, he’s the rock of the team. Loosing Gideon was bad enough, don’t want any more cast changes! (I still want Morgan and Garcia to get together, sorry Xander)

LOST what can I say about you? LOVE! JOY! Time freaking travel! For those of you who may not know, time travel is my #1 favorite science fiction theme ever. EVER! The only recent time travel show/movie I’ve missed was Life on Mars because it conflicted with something else, but it doesn’t even matter, it’s canceled…

Anyway, I have many theories about LOST, some of them fall in line with what everyone else is saying, and since I have a few overseas readers, I won’t give anything away right now. Ex-Roomie and I may go on a binge of LOST in November or December before the last season begins. Find all the little clues; see all the Ah-ha moments. Those are my favorites, the ones that make sense from season one because you saw the recent season. Heh. These writers are smart and good and know exactly how to keep people interested and curious.

I’ve watched a couple episodes of Lie to Me, but can’t commit. Good show, great cast, fun to watch!

Dropped Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone both canceled anyway.

Thursday:

Survivor: JT deserved to win. I didn’t have any doubt. Not a bad season, it was beautiful to watch. Coach was annoying but entertaining. Next season looks *swoon*. I love the landscapes and the scenery shots the most, the game is a very close second, lol. And Jeff Probst is my new favorite blogger.

Smallville ended the season with a bang, something I didn’t think they’d really do, but they did. However, according to sources on the net, said person who got killed isn’t originally who you thought he was…his little brother is! Ha, interesting, and would kinda make sense if you follow Superman lore, there was quite an age difference between the characters…if you know what I mean. If not, I could probably answer, just let me know. Heheh.

Supernatural has really become a fantastic show. The writing is crisp, edgy, and fun. The acting keeps getting better and better, the cast, though most come and go, they certainly have an impact. At first, I wasn’t sure about the whole Angels and Demons thing…but as the show went on it started to make sense and work out rather well. It wasn’t overly religious by any means, rather more mythic in scope. Cass is a great addition to the show, hope he makes it to the next season. And the Jump the Shark episode, though sad, did a great job of not actually jumping the shark. I felt kinda bad for Sam and Dean in that ep. The finale was one of the best shows of the season, but I’m kinda disappointed the Winchester Brothers sorta made nice at the end. Would have liked to see them go at it a little more.

So You Think You Can Dance started last night, what a way to kick off! Some fantastic and inspiring people on this show already. Got a little misty eyed a few times.

Dropped: CSI, 11th Hour the latter was canceled anyway.

Friday:

Terminator SCC didn’t get the chance it deserved. Working against it was bad time slot and probably high production costs with all the special effects. It’s a shame it got canceled, I thought it was a great show. One of most shocking moments was Derek’s death. I didn’t see it coming. It happened so fast that it took me a while to really process it. Something like that, in a TV show, is not often seen and well, it was awesome. Seeing him in the finale lifted my spirits a bit, then bitch ass FOX had to cancel it. But they kept Dollhouse? Really? Come on!

Did anyone else watch Glee? Yeah, I’m loving it. Music, High School, wacky teachers? What’s not to love? I’ve vowed to keep my new shows to a min next year, but I think this one already wormed it’s way into my heart. Stupid Journey song has been stuck in my head since Tuesday. Whee!

So, what did you watch and totally love this year? Come on, I want to know, tell me!

For my writer friends!

Posted on 14.05.2009 at 15:20

A reposting of a blog I did for my writer's group, though most of you should already be doing this....

The dictionary says:

Main Entry: social networking
Part of Speech: n
Definition: the use of a website to connect with people who share personal or professional interests, place of origin, education at a particular school, etc.

But what does that mean? Well, basically, social network sites—most of which are free—allow you to have a web presence and connect with other people.

Many authors have websites these days, but social networks are tools to help you make friends, follow other authors, agents, editors, as well as help you to build a fan base if pre-published.

Here are a few of the larger social networking sites:

Livejournal – www.livejournal.com – This is mainly a blogging network. They have both paid and free accounts. You are able to customize your pages with the Livejournal tools, or if you know CSS (a computer language), you can create your own.

On Livejournal you can connect with other people, affectionately called “friending”. You can follow someone else’s blog, they can follow yours, and you even have the option of adding feeds from other blogs to your Livejournal.

Livejournal has a plethora of communities and groups for every single category you can think of be it writing, TV, movies, books, to politics, pets, and photography.

Myspace – www.myspace.com – Myspace is one of the first free large social networking sites to hit the internet. Myspace also allows you to customize your pages. There are many regular websites that also help you make layouts and backgrounds if you’re not a savvy computer user type. You can add applications to Myspace, post music, pictures, and videos. Myspace also has a section for blogging.

Myspace allows you to send private messages, invitations to events, and comment on your friend’s pages. As with Livejournal, Myspace has communities and groups.

Facebook – www.facebook.com – Facebook is the new Myspace, for the older kids, some say. Another large networking site, Facebook is slightly more limited with its customization. Everyone’s Facebook page looks pretty much the same.

On Facebook, you can add applications, poke people with cute avatars, add your interests in little display boxes, and find out who shares your likes and dislikes. You can send messages, invitations, and comment on pages like Myspace, but Facebook has it more streamlined on your one “wall” page.

While Facebook doesn’t have its own blog section, you can feed any blog into your notes section so your blog can be visible to any friends you have here.

Facebook also has groups and communities as well as “Fan” pages.

Twitter – www.twitter.com – Myspace and Facebook each have a status update section on your main page. This allows you to tell friends what you’re doing, ask a quick question, or inform readers of release dates, contests, etc. Twitter is a constant stream of status updates. 140 characters are all you get per post, but the instant interaction and feedback can be lots of fun!

On Twitter, you can follow people, follow trends using hastags, and communicate in a split second with anyone currently online in Twitter. Twitter also allows you to customize your page slightly, and gives you a 140 character private Direct Message to your friends.

Remember, when getting involved in any online endeavor it’s best to read all of the regulations, terms, and conditions associated with the site. Many of these networks also have FAQ sections so you can learn about all of their applications and services.

Me? I’m on all three, plus a couple more. I have 2,866 friends. Honest. I would say a good 5% is people I know personally, old school mates, work friends, etc. Another good chunk are writer friends I made online. Even if I don’t know said people personally, we at least have one or two things in common. That is the beauty of the internet! You can find someone who is passionate about the same subject, regardless of what it is, and always have someone to talk to.

For a list of other social networks check out this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_social_networking_websites

Feel free to add me as your “friend” I’m always happy to meet new people!

Happy Networking!

Pop!

Posted on 05.05.2009 at 12:11

No, still not writing. The ideas are floating in my head, but nothing is sticking. I won't write without a solid character and plot. Sucks, but that's the way it is.

I received two more rejections in the last two weeks. One had some feedback, helpful, but not much I can do to change the scope of the story. Beside, only three chapters were read. I'm not changing my whole story based on feedback of three chapters. Though, I did appreciate them! The other was a simple form rejection. Bleh.

I have a small list of outstanding responses from agents and editors. However, I can't sit on it anymore and need to resubmit. I have a few places and people in mind, I just need to buckle down and get to work. Finding time, ah, that's the key.

I had a writing life but not social life.

I get a social life, and now I have no writing life.

Not easy to balance. I certainly don't envy you writers out there who have families. I don't think I could manage that right now. Okay, maybe if I give up TV I could, but then where would I get my ideas? lol

Regardless, TV season is almost over. My fave shows are getting to the goodie goodie parts and I'm really excited to see what happens on 24 and LOST. Heroes kinda disappointed me, but I'll live. Fringe got picked up for season 2! Not sure about Terminator:SCC, but I've got my fingers crossed.

I promised myself I wouldn't watch any new summer TV shows, but Glee really looks cute! And it's about singing! One of my weaknesses. Grr. But I won't watch it. I won't! I have So You Think You Can Dance Starting at the end of the month. I can't do anymore. I'll never get anything done!

Ah, the sacrifices we make. :-) Though, cutting out TV is far from any real sacrifice.

I went to see Wolverine this weekend. No Spoilers! But I will say...eh. It was good, not great. Hugh looked fantastic, in better shame than the first XMen movie. Liev did an amazing job. The Gambit guy sucked. Plot was eh. Fighting kicked ass and the special effects were outstanding. It looked like he really had those claws.

Yes, I'm DYING to see the Star Trek movie. I promised ex-roomie that I would watch it with him. We're trying to figure out where to meet and when. I don't want to wait too long, because all my Trek friend will be talking about it shortly after.

The other few movies I want to see in the theater: Transformers 2, Terminator, and Harry Potter. I think one or two more might be on the list, but I'm not sure.

I will NOT be going to see The Land of the Lost. Sorry. It looks ruined for me. Granted the TV show was campy and silly, but it wasn't a comedy. The trailer makes it look like a comedy. No thanks.

What I really want is a Voltron movie. Or how about Jem and the Holograms? Smurfs live action? Nah, just messing. But it could be interesting!

What old TV show or Cartoon would you like to see as a movie?

Do tell, Jenn wants to know.

Blog flu

Let's not talk about the swine flu, okay? Let's have fun and talk about some blogs that you really should be reading if you're a writer.

Those of you who actually read this, and aren't writers, I know you value my opinion on pop culture SO much! (lol) So, I'll post my own pop blog later this week after I catch up on some TV.

What's going on in the blogsphere this week?

Scott Egan is doing a pitch contest review on his blog. He asked for submissions last week and is critiquing them this week! Mines not there...yet. http://scotteagan.blogspot.com/

This is a really informative blog I found recently. http://yodiwan.wordpress.com/

I've been watching this blog for a couple of months and they have a shit load of contest announcements. You NEED to be on this one: http://writingcontests.wordpress.com/

Do you need help with your query letters? Check out the public slush pile! http://openquery.blogspot.com/

Publisher Weekly (though I am mad at one of those people over there...) has a huge list of feeds for their blogs and articles. Highly suggested: http://www.publishersweekly.com/learnRss

Got a great query, but still need an agent (ME TOO!) check out these blogs: http://www.guidetoliteraryagents.com/blog/ and http://querytracker.blogspot.com/

Seriously, I have 173 blogs I'm following on blogger alone. Take a look at my page if you want to see them all. http://jennafern.blogspot.com/ You won't be sorry you stopped by!

Happy reading!

Back to Submitting, oh the joy!

My birthday weekend was very nice. Had a little party on Friday, writer's meeting on Saturday, and visited my parents on Sunday. Busy, but that's okay...

Got another rejection this morning. However, it came with feedback. She didn't mention my writing, just the main character. Said Lucky is hard to relate to. Not sure many people can relate to this type of character without reading past chapter three, but since it was a partial, I'll never have that chance with this editor. Ah well. She was very nice and gave me something to think about.

I've decided NOT to wait for the other people to respond and submit to more editors and publishers this week. I'm not sending to any other agents either. Going right for the guts.

The list I have is mid to small publishers. They get first dibs.

If one of them is smart, they'll buy my books. Why? Because I'm willing to do all the hard work it takes to make it in this industry. I've done my homework and know what comes next. Besides, I've written a great story here. It works. It doesn't follow "traditional" romance format and I know I just need to find that one editor who gets it. With some of the new romance books I've seen in the last few months by debut authors, I seriously don't see a problem in someone picking up Lucky. *Positive thoughts, positive thoughts*

Aren't you people tired of paranormal? I sure am and I barely even read the genre.

Sure, fiction is supposed to take you away from reality and into another world but do all those worlds HAVE to involve vampires or demons or psychics or werecreatures or shapeshifters? I TRIED to find some type of supernatural being, creature, whatever, to write about that hasn't been over done and I couldn't find one. So I won't write it. Makes sense right?

Granted, I do want to write in more than one genre in general, but why saturate the market with more books about vampires when there is a crap load of them out already. I know, your answer will be "that's what sells right now."

Bah!

When I was first introduced to a certain paranormal author, I read her entire back list just so I would be ready for the new release. Granted, I read that new release and haven't picked up another one of her books and probably never will, but at least I read the older stuff too...

I'm assuming other readers do that too with series But if they did, would we need 50 new paranormal vampire/were/shapeshifter books each month? (yes, exaggerating) Doubt it. Just read something older!

Great books and authors are found that way.

Anyway, I'll be making a list of publisher to submit to this week and work on printing copies and getting envelopes ready. Some actually take e-submissions, so I'll probably start with them before the end of the work week. The others have to wait for the weekend.

Fun fun fun.

But I wouldn't have it any other way.
